Modular Systems Architect / Computational Design – ADPT
(m/w/d, 80–100 %)

Looking for a system problem?

We don’t develop buildings.

We build a system that generates them.

With ADPT, we develop a modular system for digital, circular and scalable construction — contributing to a more cost- and resource-efficient building industry.

Your
Mission

As a Modular Systems Architect, you shape the constructive-digital interface of ADPT — where physical building components, digital models and system logic come together.

You ensure that future-proof, high-quality living and working environments emerge from digital models.

Your contribution:

  • You translate building components into structured, machine-readable models
  • You model relationships, dependencies and combinability of components
  • You translate system rules into consistent model and data structures
  • You establish the foundation for valid and evaluable building configurations

You work directly at the intersection of:

Architecture & System Design
together with the Principal Systems Architect and the Architecture Design Lead

Research & Software Development
in close collaboration with a leading research group in digital construction (Chair of Computing in Civil Engineering, Prof. Dr. Markus König, Ruhr University Bochum)

Engineering Practice
in close collaboration with Arup, as part of a development partnership focused on circular and future-ready buildings

What you bring

  • Deep understanding of modular, industrialized and system-based construction
  • Ability to translate physical systems into abstract and logical structures
  • Experience with discrete components, type systems and parametric models
  • Experience in the structured modelling of building or design systems
  • Ability to formulate concepts precisely and in a way that connects architecture and systems thinking
  • Strong interest in shaping future-proof ways of designing and building
  • This role is designed for system thinkers rather than traditional design architects or BIM modelers

What makes this role unique

  • You do not work on individual buildings, but on the logic from which they emerge
  • Your work defines what becomes possible within the system — and changes how buildings are planned, built, used and optimized
  • You join at an early stage and help shape how the ADPT building system is structured, modelled and evolved from the beginning
  • You collaborate with leading partners from engineering practice and research (including Arup, RUB, TU Munich, TU Dortmund, HS Bochum)
  • ADPT buildings are not only designed and simulated, but actually built
  • Your work contributes directly to transforming the construction industry — with immediate real-world impact through pilot projects funded at EU, federal and regional level (e.g. the ADPT pilot project „ZukunftsQuartier Kunstwerkerschule„)
  • Clear perspective for long-term responsibility for a central element of the system architecture

Framework

Duration: minimum 16 months, with long-term perspective for the right fit
Location: Essen or Berlin and remote
Remote setup: flexible, depending on project phase and requirements
Compensation: salary, equity option
Start date: by agreement

If this role resonates, send us:

  • a short profile or CV
  • 2–3 projects or examples you‘ve worked on (links + brief context)
  • A short note on why you’re interested in building ADPT and which system or architectural questions interest you most

What to expect:

  • A short intro conversation
  • 1–2 deeper technical discussions
  • A conversation about terms and conditions
